5 fun and active date ideas to spice up your love life

Are you ready for a change from dinner-and-movie dates? Why not shake things up a bit by getting your hearts racing instead (and not only from staring into each other’s eyes)?

Whether you currently have a romantic partner or are just starting to get to know someone new, going on active dates is a great way to connect while boosting your mood and energy.

How getting active together can spice up your romantic relationship

The science behind the benefits of getting active with a significant other is well-known. For example, one study found that on days when people worked out with their romantic partners, they felt more positive moods both while exercising and throughout the day compared to days when they did not. They also reported being more satisfied with their romantic relationships than on days when they exercised without their partners. Plus, exercising with a partner can increase your motivation to spend more time exercising. In turn, this means that couples exercise more when they get active together.

Do you need more reasons to go on active dates? What about the benefits between the sheets? That’s right – physical activity can be a great way to spice things up in the bedroom! Research shows that physical activity reduces erectile dysfunction and improves both sexual desire and function in women and men.

5 fun and active date ideas

Planning a date, let alone an active one, can sometimes feel tough, but don’t sweat it because we have some active date ideas that we think both you and your current or future partner will love!

1. Ice skate with your date

There’s a reason that ice skating is a classic winter date that never goes out of style – gliding gracefully across a rink or frozen pond while holding hands is such a n(ice) way to bond. Even falling together is sure to break the ice (pun intended). Finish off your date with heartwarming hot chocolate or cider (ideally in front of a fire) to keep up those cozy vibes!

To find local rinks or frozen ponds, visit your municipal parks and recreation website – some locations may offer skate rentals

2. Dance your way to romance

Not only can dancing be incredibly romantic, it can also be an easy way to test the chemistry between you and your date — if you can stay in sync without stepping on each other’s toes too much, it’s a good sign! Whether you choose salsa, ballroom, hip-hop, ballet, swing or Zumba, taking a dance class is sure to make both of you smile, laugh and work up a sweat. Even if you end up looking like one of those inflatable tube people you see at car dealerships, just own it!

You can sign up for a class together at a studio or community centre near you, or if you don’t love the idea of getting your groove on in front of people other than your date or significant other, you could always follow along with one of our dance workout videos together in the comfort of your own home instead.

3. Snowshoe with your boo

Imagine this: cool and refreshing air, stunning snow-covered trails, and quality time trekking through a scenic winter wonderland just like a Hallmark movie couple. You can experience all this and more through snowshoeing: walking on deep snow wearing “webbed” shoes that prevent you from sinking, letting you get to otherwise unreachable areas. This beginner-friendly activity requires just a few basic techniques. Check out your municipal parks and recreation department’s website to find snowshoe trails near you. If you don’t own snowshoes, some trails may offer on-site rentals.

Pro tip: Make sure to dress warmly, wear lots of layers and pack water to stay hydrated, snacks to stay fueled, and a thermos with a warm beverage like hot chocolate or cider.

4. Bowl with your soulmate

Bowling blends casual, laid-back vibes with an ideal amount of friendly competition. Whether you’re getting strikes and spares or laughing at gutter balls, this classic activity is perfect for allowing both your personalities to shine through. Many bowling alleys also offer food, drinks, and other games like billiards or air hockey so you can keep up the fun.

5. Say “namaste” to your bae in a yoga sesh

Yoga is the perfect way to show off how well you can stay cool, calm and balanced in stressful situations. From hot yoga to laughter yoga, there are many types to choose from. You can sign up for an in-person class at a studio, gym or community centre, or take a virtual class led by a qualified instructor – just make sure to choose a beginner-friendly one if neither or one of you isn’t a yogi. For a more intimate and budget-friendly yoga date, you could follow along with one of our many yoga-inspired workout videos together at home.

Active dates can help you show off your playful side, break the ice (sometimes literally) and help create shared experiences that you’ll get to talk about for as long as you’re together. So, the next time you’re thinking of date ideas, skip the usual dinner and movie and instead lace up your skates or bowling shoes, strap on snowshoes, hit the dance floor or roll out yoga mats!
